Madoka Magica is a pretty good show. I doubt you need me to tell you that. The story is tragic and told in what could be described as a "beautiful" way. But I personally do not enjoy the characters as much as I would like. This is partly due to the characters being "spoiled" for me. Meaning, thinking of them brings a negative feeling for me. But I also believe that the main anime doesn't show everything that there is to see with the quintet. That being said, the main plot is still good enough. If you don't already know everything about Madoka due to spoilers. (I'll be honest, I think everyone knows the basic plot of Madoka. At the very least, you aren't going to watch it without thinking "magical girls but dark, therefore cool.") If you somehow haven't seen it and clicked this anyway, you're truly souring an experience, I think.
For example, Mami dies very early in the main series and isn't seen that often in the anime. However, I do know that we get to learn a lot more about her in the movies. But since I have only seen the main anime, I don't have a strong opinion on the cast. Again, I admit that this is a personal thought of mine. I genuinely wish that I can get more interested in the series because I find the worldbuilding fascinating. For me, that is the strongest selling point of the series. I love the endless cycle the magical girls go through. I like the way Kyuubey lures in more girls to make contracts with it. I LOVE how the scarcity of grief seeds leads to infighting between girls.
I have tried to give the series multiple chances. I've partly watched the side story with my mother. She got disinterested in the plot. I've watched the main story with my friend, but he said the labyrinths' visuals hurt his eyes. (Speaking of though, I personally love the way the witches look. I think this page layout is a testiment to that.) But I am willing to give the show another try, since at the time of writing this, I am not watching anything. When I am able to watch more Madoka, I will update this page with more of my thoughts.

Even though I think they aren't talked about too much, the witch designs are one of my favorite parts of the Madoka series. They are both creepy and otherworldly, but there is still a story being told about each of them. Their cobbled together designs are the remnants of the girl they used to be. The witches still have personalities. If one cared to look into them, you can see that. From what I can tell, Nagisa is one such girl that we get to learn a lot about. But the same witches get used over and over again, giving the viewer an oppurtunty to learn more about them.

Honestly, I should have put this section first, but honestly I wanted to put more of an emphasis on the witches since they are underrated in my opinion. But I honestly have a lot to say about the girls themselves. I'll start with the designs themselves. I think the outfits of each of the quintet is special and unique. I'm not the kind of person to pretend other magical girl series(es?) are lame and girly. But I do think the Madoka outfits stand out. I'll go over how I feel about everyone on a separate tab, but I don't feel too negatively about them. However, there is the raised eyebrow that comes with younger girls in skimpy outfits. For example, the school uniform is a bit iffy in my opinion. Besides that, I have no negatives when it comes to the weapons. I'm the kind of person who prefers their magical girls with a weapon, orthodox or not. Which is why I especially love Mami's choice in weapon. With it being ribbon(?) that can turn into firearms is both creative and works for her character. She's a veteran, so of course she can use her skill in a powerful way.
Speaking about weaponery, the way the girls fight is also uniquely interesting to me. I love that they cannot spam their powers, since that will make them need to use a grief seed faster. They need to play it smart, and puts them in a situation unique to Madoka. If they team up with others, they will need to share the spoils. But they might also need the extra help in a fight. In world, it adds a tense situation to be in. As someone who likes to roleplay, it adds something fun in a scenario.
